Emergency Food & Shelter Program

United Way of Thurston County is seeking applications from nonprofit organizations to apply for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding to support and expand food and shelter programs in Thurston County . A local board of community volunteers will oversee the 2011 federal disbursement.

The Emergency Food and Shelter National Board, a program of FEMA, was created in 1983 to supplement the work of local social service organizations within the United States , both private and governmental, to help people in need of emergency assistance. This collaborative effort between the private and public sectors has disbursed more than $3.4 billion in federal funds, to over 12,000 local providers, in more than 2,500 communities during its 28-year history.

Under the terms from the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program, local funding recipients must be a registered 501 (c) 3 nonprofit, maintain fiscal accountability, conduct an annual audit, practice non-discrimination, demonstrate the capacity to deliver food and/or shelter programs and have a volunteer Board of Directors.

Funding applications are available at United Way of Thurston County, 1211 Fourth Avenue E, Suite 101, Olympia, or can be downloaded here.  Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on January 28, 2011.  Further information is available by contacting FEMA distribution coordinator Stephanie Blumhagen , at (360) 943-2773 x 11 or sblumhagen@unitedway-thurston.org.
