With a focus on bringing lasting change, grants totaling more than $450,000 were awarded in support of 49 health and human service programs by United Way of Thurston County (UWTC).
The Community Investment grants, funded through UWTC’s Community Care Fund, were awarded to 34 local organizations which operate the programs.
Each program demonstrated the ability to make a difference in Thurston County by: (1) Helping Kids Succeed, (2) Meeting Basic Needs, (3) Promoting Self-Sufficiency and (4) Supporting Health and Wellness. These are the four critical areas where your local United Way is working to improve the lives of others.
Dozens of volunteers from across the community logged more than 1,700 hours during the three month Community Investment evaluation process. The volunteers attended training sessions, read grant applications, listened to presentations by applicants, and ultimately made funding recommendations.
The dollars distributed through the Community Investment grants were collected during last year’s UWTC campaign. The Community Investment grant process makes sure donor contributions are invested where they will have the greatest positive impact on peoples’ lives and the community.
UWTC also allocates additional grants for early learning programs, 2-1-1 and emerging needs, as well as distributes more than $240,000 in donor designated gifts to nonprofit organizations.
The 2007 campaign kicked-off in mid-September 2007 and is co-chaired by Cathy Wolfe, Thurston County Commissioner and Mike Edwards, CEO of Thurston First Bank.
