Local Church, Runners’ Club Contribute Generously to Thurston County COVID-19 Response Fund

Our Thurston County COVID-19 Response Fund continues to act as a vital fundraising hub for both individuals and local community organizations. From churches to fitness clubs, community organizations are using previously planned events to rally their members to raise money for the Response Fund.

The Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation (OUUC) had their annual dinner and auction scheduled for Saturday, May 2. The governor’s Stay Home, Stay Healthy mandate prevented the congregation from gathering as they usually would, so church leaders pivoted to plan a virtual event.

Rev. Mary Gear worked with OUUC’s Minister of Music to coordinate a virtual cabaret night. Members of the congregation submitted videos of themselves and their families singing songs, doing dances, and other performative talents. “OUUC has a long history of outreach and support for community organizations. We normally do a ‘raise the paddle’ for a community organization at our dinner and auction, and this year is no different,” explains Rev. Mary. “United Way’s Thurston County COVID-19 Response Fund was the obvious choice.”

Herb Reeves is the president of the Oly Trail Runners. They are a nonprofit group that hosts several races in Capitol Forest every year. A 50-mile race scheduled for the end of April was canceled, so they decided to host a “virtual” race for all the runners who had trained so hard. Herb consulted with the group’s board members about where the funds generated by the runners’ entry fees should be donated. “The suggestion of United Way’s Thurston County COVID-19 Response Fund was the obvious choice, as it’s a conglomerate of local agencies leading the fight against the pandemic,” says Herb. “We are very happy to do our part to help the local community.”

If you belong to a community organization and want to harness your group’s passion to support local COVID-19 relief efforts, consider donating to our Thurston County COVID-19 Response Fund with the proceeds from your next fundraiser!
