1. Tell us about your business; and what is your business philosophy?
My name is Stephanie Henderson Stocker and I am proud to be Chair this year of Women United Thurston County. I am an attorney and partner at Henderson Law, practicing law with my husband (Simon Stocker) and my father (Stephen Henderson). I am incredibly honored that our Olympia law firm, Henderson Law Group, PLLC, is a Small Business Partner of United Way Thurston County. Henderson Law is a boutique law firm where we do things differently than most firms. Taking on fewer clients & referring many potential clients to our peers, so as to ensure we continue our successful strategy of a deep dive into every nuance of our client’s case. Our brand of wrap-around client compassion & expert legal strategy tailored to each client’s specific facts and legal claims, results in a proven track record of exceptional outcomes for our clients.
A little more about Steve, Stephanie & Simon:
Steve Henderson is the founding partner of Henderson Law and has practiced law in Olympia for 44 years. He graduated in the very first class of 18 students at University of Puget Sound law school in August 1974. He finished law school in one month short of 2 years. Steve and his wife, Judy Henderson, are excited to be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary next year.
Simon Stocker has practiced law in Washington State for over 20 years, joining Henderson Law in 2012. He began his career as a prosecuting attorney in King County, going on to work as a civil city attorney in King and Kitsap Counties. He currently focuses his practice in civil litigation and estate planning. Simon is a proud member of the Washington State Association for Justice and the South Puget Sound Estate Planning Counsel. Simon and I have been married since 2010 and we are the proud parents of two incredible daughters, ages five and seven.
I am Stephanie Stocker and I lead our Employment Law practice at Henderson Law Group. I have 16 years' experience in employment law litigation and am passionate about the equal rights work that I advocate for our clients. After graduating from University of WA, then earning my JD from Gonzaga Law, I was invited to serve as legal clerk to Chief Justice Gerry Alexander of the WA State Supreme Court before joining the Seattle law firm of Carney Badley Spellman. I joined Henderson Law in 2013 and have since represented many clients in high profile harassment, discrimination and #MeToo sex assault cases locally and across the county. My dedication to anti-oppression & equal rights advocacy goes beyond my legal work and is reflected in my commitment to volunteerism and community leadership, including serving as Chair of Women United Thurston County and serving 2016 on the Board of Directors for SafePlace Olympia. I was honored this year to be awarded "Top 100" attorneys nationwide by The National Trial Lawyers Association.
2. Why are you passionate about your commitment to United Way’s Community Investment Partnership?
The team at Henderson Law Group is excited to be a partner with United Way in helping to build a better tomorrow for our community. Honored to roll up our sleeves and help United Way in its mission to ensure the health, education and financial stability of every man, woman and child in Thurston County.
3. What is something interesting or surprising that most people don’t know about each of the partners at Henderson Law?
Stephanie: I got a tattoo a few years ago that makes me smile; it reminds me every day that fighting for my client’s truth is the core of why I am passionate about my work. Written in cursive script up my back of my ankle, it reads: Walk in Truth
Steve: I learned how to play the bagpipes in 1994 and have played avidly ever since, serving as the Olympia Highlanders Pipe Major for several years.
Simon: I was born in Switzerland.
4. What would your older self say to your younger self?
Stephanie: Trust your instincts and don’t be so hard on yourself! Your 20s are for paying your dues, working tirelessly and gaining the experience and life skills to kill it in your 30s. Don’t be afraid to FAIL – give yourself grace to learn as you fail forward in your path of progress. Lastly, be wise about whom you surround yourself with – really wise. Cultivate relationships with those who are kind, loyal & who tell you the truth. Politely excuse yourself from relationships with toxic people, especially those who lie to you or speak cruelly about you behind your back.
Steve: My older self would tell the younger to keep the journey of life in perspective and be sure to smell the roses along the way. Celebrate life with your spouse and family every day.
Simon: Take care of your body. ( Football, Rugby and Army have left their mark)
5. What’s your favorite quote?
Steph: “The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them and do nothing.” – Albert Einstein
Steve: “All things in moderation.”
Simon: It always seems impossible until it’s done. Nelson Mandela
