United Way of Thurston County’s Emergency Assistance Fund Will Remain Open to Help Assist Those Impacted by Shutdown
January 25, 2019, Olympia, Wash. — On January 24, United Way of Thurston County (UWTC) activated its Emergency Assistance Fund, a community-wide effort to provide rapid financial assistance to furloughed federal workers, essential personnel who are working without pay and federal contract employees affected by the ongoing partial government shutdown.
On January 25, the shutdown has ended, temporarily.
"We're relieved to learn that the shutdown will end for at least three weeks. We'll continue to monitor the situation and we remain prepared for any developments and will respond as appropriate,” said UWTC’s executive director, Chris Wells. “We know the shutdown has created enormous hardships for those who have been impacted, and we will continue to offer assistance to those employees who urgently need it.”
UWTC is committed to activating the UWTC Emergency Assistance Fund to offer local support in the event of any future acute crises that may significantly impact Thurston County residents.
"We are deeply grateful for the community-wide support for the UWTC Emergency Assistance Fund,” said Wells. “We appreciate the many people who have made donations to the fund, and the generous support of our local financial institutions and business partners."
United Way urges those seeking assistance to call Washington 2-1-1 (dial 211) to access the Emergency Assistance Fund and additional services now available to those impacted by the shutdown. Washington 2-1-1 call center operating hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Community Action Council of Lewis, Mason & Thurston Counties will manage the allocation of the Emergency Assistance Fund. All requests for assistance should first go through 2-1-1. 2-1-1 will screen and pre-qualify all individuals seeking assistance. CAC will begin accepting referrals on Monday, January 28. CAC hours are Monday – Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
