United Way of Thurston County (UWTC) is the place to go if you want to make a difference. Our Volunteers United initiative connects you to local opportunities to make a difference that meets your diverse needs, interests, and passions.
How Volunteers United works:
Through our partnerships with nonprofits, educational institutions, and public agencies, Volunteers United stays up to date on community needs and aims to support the work being done at local organizations. Our Volunteers United team works with you to steward an outstanding volunteer experience tailored to you and fosters a community for learning, growth, and connection.
Our Volunteers United team is dedicated to supporting all community members who want to make a difference in our community. There are a variety of ways that people can get involved!
What opportunities are available?
Days of Service
UWTC hosts large volunteer events throughout the year. This includes our annual Day of Caring, the largest single day of volunteerism in Thurston County, in late September; Holidays United during the winter; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service; and other summer events. Days of service can vary from year to year.
UWTC partners with dozens of local nonprofits, educational institutions, and public agencies and stays up to date on their volunteer needs. Our Volunteers United team will support you in identifying and connecting you with opportunities that may be a good fit.
Volunteers who are 55+ years old can opt in to the AmeriCorps Seniors Retired and Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP). Our Volunteers United team has staff dedicated to supporting RSVP volunteers specifically. AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers also receive mileage reimbursement for travel to volunteer sites of up to $40 per month and free supplemental volunteer insurance. As a grant-funded program, RSVP also offers volunteer opportunities in Mason and Lewis Counties.
UWTC's Greater Sound Sound AmeriCorps VISTA aims to reduce poverty through service at local nonprofits, educational institutions, and/or public agencies. We offer a ten-week summer opportunity through Summer Associates and a one-year opportunity through Greater South Sound VISTA. Summer Associates can do indirect and/or direct service. Yearlong members conduct indirect service and capacity building activities, such as fundraising, grant writing, reserach, and volunteer recruitment. Summer Associates receive a living allowance and end-of-service award. Yearlong members receive a living allowance, end-of-service award, healthcare benefits plan, childcare assistance (if eligible), loan forebearance and interest accrual or deferment on qualified student loans, relocation assistance, comprehensive leave, and Non-Competitive Eligibility (NCE) status for federal jobs for one year.
